The Live Vocal Rack
Posted by C. Shirock on Thursday Dec 4, 2008 Under Gear WorldThis is the vocal rack that interfaces with our sound board. We try to emulate (as much as possible) the same sounds we worked so hard to get in the studio in the live setting. This is what we run Pap & Chuck’s vocals through live.
Below is a top-to-bottom overview of the pieces in the rack:
1. Power conditioner – serves as sort of a giant surge protector, and makes it a convenient place to plug-in the other pieces of gear in the rack.
2. UHF receivers for Chuck and Pap’s wireless microphones.
3. Auxiliary reverb/delay effects unit.
4. Universal Audio two channel tube preamplifier. This unit is used to amplify the signal of the vocal microphones.
5. Distressors (2) – an automatic gain (or volume) control device (AGC in engineering terms). Basically, it electronically controls the volume of just about any source in a very pleasing, and “musical” manner – adding fullness, intelligibility, and especially in the Distressor’s case – excitement. This type of device is often called a “limiter” or “compressor” by audio industry people, but since the Distressor uses digital controls, it combines several of these devices into one powerful unit.
On the reverse side of all of this is a mass of wires that is actually extraordinarily well organized. This entire unit entirely custom-built in Nashville, and designed in such a manner that the back panel should never have to be removed.
